Dr. Michael Mosley Suggests Taking One Vitamin to Safeguard your Brain

Your brain may benefit from one nutrient that is either in two foods or is available as a supplement.

A “brain protective” nutrient that you should incorporate into your daily routine has been disclosed by Dr. Michael Mosley.

Numerous studies indicate that eating a well-balanced diet helps protect your brain from a variety of health issues, such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

The health expert did, however, point out that one particular nutrient—found in fish, seaweed, or supplements—is particularly significant.

According to the doctor, omega-3 fatty acids can strengthen your immune system, protect your heart, and improve the health of your brain.

There are various kinds of this essential fatty acid for your health, but the two most significant are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

“Among other things, they keep your brain cells healthy and communicate with one another,” said Dr. Mosley.

The study found a high correlation between blood levels of EPA and DHA and brain health, so the expert is not the only one who supports the benefits of omega-3 on your brain. The study was published in the journal Neurology.

Researchers examined blood samples and brain scans from two thousand middle-aged volunteers and discovered that those with the greatest concentrations of EPA and DHA outperformed others on cognitive tests.

Furthermore, the volunteers with high levels of DHA and EPA and an APOE4 gene mutation associated with a significantly higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease had less brain damage than the control group, the physician noted.

“Thus, these omega-3s are protective for the brain, but the precise reason is unknown.”

According to the health expert, one explanation for these fatty acids’ anti-inflammatory qualities is that they are a component of the membranes that envelop nerve cells.
