Study Reveals Top Healthiest Foods: Watercress Takes the Lead


Watercress has emerged as the ultimate superfood, claiming the top spot in a recent study that evaluated 47 fruits and vegetables for their nutrient content. Conducted by researchers, the study assessed the foods based on critical nutrients, including protein, fiber, calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K, among others. Watercress, the affordable leafy green, secured a perfect score of 100 out of 100, thanks to its outstanding nutrient profile. Notably, it costs just around ¬£1 to incorporate into one’s diet, making it an accessible and beneficial addition.

Other contenders in the top ranks included spinach, broccoli, parsley, pumpkin, and romaine lettuce. Impressively, all but six of the assessed vegetables were classified as “powerhouse” foods, providing over 10% of the daily value per 100 calories.Jennifer Di Noia, an associate professor at William Paterson University, emphasized the importance of nutrient density, explaining that foods higher in nutrients per calorie offer greater health benefits. She further highlighted that these “powerhouse” fruits and vegetables are associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases like cardiovascular ailments, neurodegenerative conditions, and certain cancers.

The findings underscore the significance of informed food choices and nutrient-rich diets. The study, published in the Preventing Chronic Disease journal by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, offers valuable insights for individuals seeking to optimize their nutritional intake and overall well-being.
