Health Experts Caution over Unseasonal Rise of Winter Vomiting Bug

Vomiting

Norovirus, one of the most prevalent causes of gastroenteritis, is on the rise in Ireland, the HSE has warned. The unpleasant bug’s symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea.

There are concerns that this will increase the demand for healthcare facilities and staff. According to the HSE, the current period of high norovirus levels might last several weeks. Norovirus levels are typically high between December and April, but there has been an unseasonal surge in recent weeks, as witnessed in Europe and the United States, according to the HSE.

Previous outbreaks of the virus have resulted in restrictions on hospital visits, particularly during the winter months.

According to the HSE, it’s not always possible to avoid having norovirus. However, following the guidelines below can help stop the virus spreading. Stay off work or school for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided. You should also avoid visiting anyone in the hospital at this time.
Medical experts advice to follow certain instructions strictly to keep the possible infections away.

  • Wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand gels are ineffective at killing the virus.
  • Disinfect any potentially contaminated surfaces or objects. The best option is to use a bleach-based household cleanser.
  • Wash any clothing or bedding that may have become infected separately on a hot cycle to guarantee the virus is killed.
  • Do not share towels or flannels.
  • Flush any contaminated poop or vomit in the toilet and disinfect the surrounding area.
  • Avoid eating raw or unclean produce.
